Coach Ritchie, the ERW AI assistant
Welcome

Hello — I am Coach Ritchie. I am the AI assistant for this programme. Ritchie Wingo built me, and your work is marked against the rubric he published; anything that falls below the mark to continue, he reviews himself, because that is the point at which a person needs help rather than a score. I am here for the moments in between, when a renewal pack is due on Thursday and you want to argue a point through with someone first.

Fifteen sessions, twenty-five minutes a day, three weeks. A company can hold a copy of the Petroleum Industry Act and still have no dependable way to execute the obligations that matter to its business. Legal understands the provision, operations collects the measurement, finance calculates the payment, and nobody can show that the whole obligation was fulfilled. That is a leadership problem, not a legal one, and it is where AI either helps or makes the confusion faster.

Every assignment is about your company, and every assignment comes back with a written letter — what holds up and why, and where something is thin, exactly where to look. By Session 15 you will hold a signed ninety-day game plan for one obligation that matters, with a named owner, a baseline and the evidence to show what happened.

Ask me anything as you work and I will help you think it through, but I will not write your game plan for you, I do not give legal advice, and I switch myself off while you sit a quiz or an exam.

What you walk away able to do

This programme assumes you are not a lawyer or a technologist and do not intend to become one. It ends with you able to take a legal obligation and make it run inside your company — owned, evidenced, decided on time — and to tell, in one meeting, where AI genuinely helps and where it would only make an unowned process faster.

Turn law into decisions

Write an executable obligation record: source, applicability, trigger, owner, evidence, closure rule — with legal time kept apart from management time.

Make authority visible

Separate performing, authorising and verifying. Name the sponsor, the owner and the specialist approver, with delegations that have limits.

Fix the evidence

Stable identities, a time basis and an evidence status for every record — around the decision that matters, not the whole estate.

Place AI correctly

Rules for dates and calculations, language models for retrieval and comparison, and an approval boundary no tool crosses.

Execute across the chain

Licensing, measurement, host community funding, methane reporting, safety, supply and the midstream and downstream handoffs.

Govern and assure

A governance record for every AI tool, submission packs an auditor can reconstruct, and agents held to an allowlist.

Make the capital case honestly

Payback and NPV on stated assumptions, retirement funding understood, and no invented avoided fines.

Run ninety days

A pilot with a sponsor, a baseline and gates at days 30, 60 and 90 — then scale, narrow, repair or stop.

Who this is for

It is written forIt is not written for
Managing directors, chief executives, executive and non-executive directors of upstream, midstream, downstream and service companiesAnyone looking for legal advice on a specific licence or filing — that needs the current instrument and your own counsel
Functional heads — operations, finance, legal and regulatory, HSE, community relations, commercial, technology — who answer for PIA obligationsEngineers looking for model architecture or coding work — that is a different course
Compliance, internal audit and assurance leaders who must reconstruct what happenedAnyone wanting a certificate without writing about their own company
Lenders, investors, advisers and public officials who must judge a petroleum company’s execution and its AI claimsAnyone expecting twenty minutes of video and a pass

What you leave with: the game plan

This programme does not end in a folder of notes. In Session 1 you choose the one obligation that matters most to your business, and every session after that writes one section of a single document — your 90-Day PIA Game Plan — around it. By Session 15 you assemble and sign it. Written properly, it is the paper you table at your next executive committee.

WeekSections you write
Week 1
The Law in the Operating Model
1. Section 1 — Where we are today: the obligation that matters most and the honest answer to the four questions.
2. Section 2 — The one-page obligation trace and the first fix it needs.
3. Section 3 — The executable obligation record.
4. Section 4 — Sponsor, owners and decision rights.
5. Section 5 — The evidence index and the data gaps, each with an owner.
Week 2
Executing the Obligations
6. Section 6 — The AI role: layers, rules versus model, and the approval boundary.
7. Section 7 — The permission dependency schedule.
8. Section 8 — The quantity evidence chain and reconciliation rule.
9. Section 9 — The stakeholder or environmental evidence chain, and the unsupported claim.
10. Section 10 — The critical handoff and where its evidence breaks.
Week 3
Trust, Capital and the Ninety Days
11. Section 11 — The governance record and authority boundary.
12. Section 12 — The submission package and the agent boundary.
13. Section 13 — The honest capital case and the capability we will own.
14. Section 14 — The board scorecard and the decision we will ask for.
15. Section 15 — The assembled, signed 90-Day PIA Game Plan with its executive summary.
Said plainly: the game plan is only as good as the honesty you put in it. Every assignment asks about your real company — your real obligations, your real owners, your real evidence gaps. Write about a hypothetical company and you will pass nothing, because the rubrics ask for sources, owners, baselines and dates.

The certificate

This programme is free, and nothing is upsold to you inside it. When you finish, you receive an ERW CommandPIA certificate of completion in your own name — issued on a pass, not on attendance.

To receive itWhat that means
Every assignment passedSessions 1 to 14, each marked at 70 or above against its published rubric. Work below the mark comes back with what to fix; resubmit and the new mark replaces the old one.
The capstone passedYour signed 90-Day PIA Game Plan, Session 15, marked at 70 or above.
The Final Exam passedFifteen questions, three of them rebuilt from your own earlier mistakes, at 70 or above.

The certificate is emailed to the Google address you signed in with. It certifies completion of an ERW leadership programme; it is not a legal qualification, a regulator’s licence or a university award.

How this works

1 · Learn

One session a day, twenty-five minutes. Each one teaches part of the doctrine and makes you use it on your own business.

2 · Write

Every session ends in a written assignment — a record, a schedule, a chain, a game-plan section. Four hundred to nine hundred words.

3 · Get marked

Against the rubric printed under the assignment. A written letter comes back, usually within minutes.

4 · Sign the game plan

Session 15 assembles fourteen sections into one document, then the final exam — three of whose questions are rebuilt from your own mistakes.

What happens when you submit

No mystery, and no waiting days for a mark. Here is the whole loop.

STEP 1You submit

One document per session — Word or Google Docs — with the first line reading Session: N. Your own company, your own obligation.

STEP 2It is marked

Against that session’s published rubric, criterion by criterion. The same rubric every time, for everybody.

STEP 3A letter comes back

Not a score — a letter naming what holds up, what is asserted without evidence, and exactly where to look to fix it.

STEP 4It becomes a game-plan section

Your mark joins your progress page and the corrected section goes into your game plan, so Session 15 is assembly rather than writing.

What a marked assignment looks like

An illustration of the letter format, using Session 8’s real rubric.

CommandPIA — Session 8 — MarkedMeasurement and Custody Transfer80 / 100
The rubric, criterion by criterion
CriterionAwarded
Maps one real handoff with systems, owners by role, units and time basis stated22 / 25
Classifies every value as measured, allocated, calculated or estimated and identifies where a label is lost20 / 25
Walks a difference to a residual with each adjustment and its approver, without treating reconciled differences as recovered product25 / 30
States the company's default explanation for differences and tests it honestly against the evidence13 / 20
What you did well
  • Your handoff is real and bounded: dispatch at the jetty meter to receipt at the depot tank, with the system and the owner named at each end. That is a chain someone can examine, not a description of the industry.
  • You walked the difference down properly. The cut-off and the conversion correction are shown as reconciled reporting differences, each with its approver, and you did not call either of them recovered product.
  • Your residual is reported as a residual. You resisted the temptation to explain it before the evidence does, and you named the next investigation and who owns it.
Where to look
  • Two of your values are labelled “measured” that your own description shows are allocated. Fix the labels before anything else, because a lost label is how an estimate ends up in a return.
  • Your event time and posting time are collapsed into one date. A loading that crosses midnight will land in different periods at each end; keep the cut-off visible.
  • You say the company “usually” treats differences as losses. Test that honestly: how many of the last five were in fact timing? That paragraph is where most of your remaining marks are.
Below 70? Work comes back with what to fix rather than a grade. Fix it, resubmit, and the new mark replaces the old one. Nothing about this programme is a trap.

The 15 sessions

Three weeks. Five sessions a week, twenty-five minutes each, at whatever pace your diary allows. Every session ends in one written assignment about your own company, and every assignment becomes a section of your game plan.

Assessments

Seven papers, marked the moment you submit, every question returned with the reasoning behind it. Three pop quizzes of five questions, three practice exams of fifteen, and a fifteen-question final. You are never left to guess when to sit one: the session that opens a paper says so, prints the paper beside its assignment, and flags itself on the session tab — and your progress page always names the paper due now. Closed book, no notes, and Coach Ritchie switches himself off while you sit one. Pass mark 70 — and you may resit the practice papers as often as you like.

The Capstone — your 90-Day PIA Game Plan

Fourteen sections written one per session, assembled and signed in Session 15: the first pilot named, a baseline, a sponsor and an owner, a start date, day-30, day-60 and day-90 gates, and a one-page executive summary your executive committee could act on.

The book behind the programme

The Intelligent PIA by Ritchie Wingo, front cover

The Intelligent PIA — An Operating Doctrine for AI Leadership and Petroleum Industry Act Execution in Nigeria. Seventeen chapters across six parts, from leadership and data foundations through licensing, measurement, host communities, environment, safety, supply, governance, reporting, agentic AI, fiscal and retirement decisions, Nigerian capability and the ninety-day game plan.

These 15 sessions teach the doctrine and make you use it. The book carries what twenty-five minutes cannot: the full chapters, the numbered sources for every statutory proposition, and the appendices — the pilot charter, the obligation register, the evidence index, the source change register, the eighteen-case test pack, the benefits ledger, the board scorecard and the decision rights matrix — ready to use without buying any platform.

Nothing in this programme depends on buying it. Every session, paper and certificate is free whether you own the book or not.

The Intelligent Series. The Intelligent PIA is one book in an operating-doctrine series for Nigeria’s energy industry, alongside The Intelligent Barrel, The Intelligent Power, The Intelligent Petrochemical Company and The Intelligent Terminal. Visit the Intelligent Series site →

House rules

Questions people ask first

QuestionAnswer
Is it really free?Yes. No card, no key, no paid tier. The certificate is free too. The book is available separately for anyone who wants the full chapters and templates, and nothing in the programme depends on it.
How much time, honestly?Twenty-five minutes of reading and thirty to sixty minutes of writing per session. Call it six to eight hours over three weeks, and rather more if you do the capstone properly.
Do I need a legal or technical background?Neither. You need a real company, one obligation that matters to it, and the willingness to look at both honestly.
We are a service company, not a licence holder. Does it apply?Yes. Choose the obligation that reaches your work most directly — qualification evidence, flow-down from a client, Nigerian content records — and the sessions show where the discipline differs.
Is this legal advice? No. It is an operating doctrine for leaders. It teaches how to connect obligations to owners, evidence and decisions; applicability for a real entity is a judgement for your own specialists.
Can my leadership team do it together?Yes, and it works better that way — but each person signs in and submits their own work, because the game plan is only useful if it is argued over.
What if I miss a week?Nothing happens. There are no cohort dates and no deadlines. Your progress waits for you.
Who marks it?It is marked against R. Wingo’s published rubric, criterion by criterion, the same way every time. Anything that comes out below the mark to continue, he reviews himself before it reaches you. Coach Ritchie helps you think; he does not mark and he does not write your game plan.
