Translation looks like a solved problem until a customer letter goes out in the wrong register, or a contract term is rendered three different ways in one document. AI-103 asks you to build translation two ways, with Azure Translator in Foundry Tools and with an LLM-powered flow you design yourself, and to know when each is the right call. The line between them has moved: Translator’s newest API can now send a request to an LLM deployment, with tone and gender controls. Today you learn the Translator family, call it without a key, run the same text through your own prompt, and compare the results honestly.
rg-ai103 already serves Translator. You add one model deployment on Global Standard for LLM translation, and two role assignments of Cognitive Services User on the Foundry resource: one for your own account and one for the resource’s own managed identity.az cognitiveservices account deployment delete --deployment-name <name> -n <resource> -g rg-ai103. Remove the role assignments under Access control (IAM) → Role assignments if you prefer. Keep rg-ai103 for the capstone.| Option | What it is | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Translator, standard NMT | Neural machine translation, the default engine of Text translation (deploymentName omitted, or general) | High volume, predictable output, billing by characters, many languages |
| Translator with an LLM deployment | The same Translator request, with a target sent to the LLM deployment you name in deploymentName, plus optional tone and gender | You want LLM fluency and register control, but keep Translator’s request shape and language handling |
| LLM-powered translation flow | Your own prompt to a deployed model through the Responses API | Translation is one step in a bigger task: translate and summarise, translate and classify, apply a glossary in the prompt |
| Document translation | Translator for whole files, keeping their structure and format | The input is a Word file or a PDF, not a string |
Translator uses neural machine translation by default; its 2026-06-06 API can also send a target to an LLM deployment. An LLM flow is your own prompt, so its output is only as controlled as your instructions.

In the Foundry portal it sits under Build → Models → AI Services → Azure Translator - Text Translation → Adaptive LLM.Custom Translator trains and deploys a dedicated NMT model from parallel documents. Adaptive custom translation trains nothing: it retrieves your reference pairs at request time to steer an LLM. Batch document translation needs Blob Storage; single-file synchronous translation does not.

}deploymentName defaults to general, Translator’s reserved name for NMT. Set it to your LLM deployment’s name to use that model, or to a Custom Translator category ID. tone takes formal, informal or neutral; gender takes female, male or neutral. Two rules: using an LLM requires a Microsoft Foundry resource, and LLM translation is not available when the Translator resource is configured with a private endpoint.Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Key, a bearer token, or Microsoft Entra ID. With Entra ID on the global endpoint you also send Ocp-Apim-ResourceId. With your resource’s custom domain endpoint, https://<resource-name>.cognitiveservices.azure.com/translator/text/translate, the bearer token is enough. Regional endpoints don’t support Entra authentication. The caller needs Cognitive Services User, and the token scope is https://cognitiveservices.azure.com/.default.In 2026-06-06, a target without deploymentName uses NMT (general). Naming an LLM deployment needs a Foundry resource and unlocks tone and gender. A keyless call sends a Microsoft Entra bearer token, and the caller needs Cognitive Services User.
azure-ai-translation-text, with TextTranslationClient and translate(body=..., to_language=...). Here Learn’s pages disagree: the package readme shows version 2.0.0, while the SDK overview table lists 1.0.1 against v3.0, and neither shows an LLM target. azure-cognitiveservices-speech, imported as speechsdk. Everything starts with a SpeechConfig. The quickstarts build it with subscription= (a key) and endpoint=. We will not use a key.SpeechConfig(token_credential=..., endpoint=...), passing a TokenCredential and the resource’s custom domain endpoint. Two conditions apply. The resource needs a custom domain name (creating one is not reversible); the quickstarts show a Foundry resource’s endpoint already in that form, https://<resource-name>.cognitiveservices.azure.com. And your identity needs Cognitive Services Speech User or Cognitive Services Speech Contributor.speech_recognition_language (for example en-US), create an AudioConfig (the default microphone, or filename= for a WAV file), then a SpeechRecognizer. recognize_once_async().get() transcribes one utterance of up to 30 seconds, or until silence is detected. Check result.reason: RecognizedSpeech, NoMatch or Canceled. For longer audio, the how-to uses continuous recognition.speech_synthesis_voice_name; the quickstart uses en-US-Ava:DragonHDLatestNeural, in the format {locale}-{VoiceName}:{VoiceType}. Create an AudioOutputConfig (the default speaker, or filename=) and a SpeechSynthesizer, call speak_text_async(text).get(), and check for SynthesizingAudioCompleted.SpeechConfig holds the endpoint and credential. SpeechRecognizer with recognize_once_async transcribes one utterance; SpeechSynthesizer with speak_text_async speaks text. Keyless means token_credential, a custom domain endpoint and a Speech role.

Do the self-check above before you submit. You have now met every objective on the AI-103 outline. The exam will not ask them in course order, and it will not tell you which session a question came from. This session puts the whole outline in front of you, domain by domain, so you can separate the bullets you can explain and build from the ones you merely recognise. It also sets out, from Microsoft’s own pages, what the exam is like to sit: the time, the breaks, the question types and the Learn access you get. Then you sit Practice Exam 2 under real conditions and build an honest register of what still needs repair.

The capstone is one small solution in your own subscription, built the way a careful team would build it: a grounded agent with a tool, no keys anywhere, a guardrail, tracing you can read and an evaluation you can defend. It touches every domain of AI-103, and it is work a hiring manager can actually look at. Then you sit The Marked Final, clean up for the last time, and book the real exam with Microsoft.
rg-ai103: a chat model deployment on Global Standard; an Application Insights resource connected to your project (or the Session 17 one, if you kept it); a vector store holding your document, and a prompt agent with the file search tool; a custom guardrail; an uploaded evaluation dataset and one evaluation run. Role assignments as Learn lists them: Foundry User on the project, Storage Blob Data Contributor on the project’s storage account for uploads, and Log Analytics Reader to query traces.rg-ai103 → Delete resource group, or az group delete --name rg-ai103. A deleted Foundry resource is soft-deleted: you cannot create one with the same name for 48 hours unless you purge it (Manage deleted resources → Purge), and charges for any provisioned deployments continue until it is purged. Then remove the course budget: Subscriptions → your subscription → Budgets. Finally, run az group list as in Session 20, delete anything the course created outside rg-ai103, and make sure the Session 22 GitHub workflow is disabled.| Part | What it must do | What proves it |
|---|---|---|
| A grounded agent with a tool | A prompt agent that answers from your document through FileSearchTool | Output of a grounded answer, and of a question it correctly declines |
| Keyless authentication | DefaultAzureCredential throughout; no key in code, variables or screenshots | Your code, and the role assignments you used |
| A guardrail | A custom guardrail assigned to the agent, with controls set to Annotate and block | Its controls and assignment, and a test prompt it blocked |
| Tracing | Application Insights connected, and your run visible in the Foundry traces view | A trace of one run, with its spans |
| An evaluation run | At least one quality and one safety evaluator over five or more queries | The run’s status and its report in the portal |
| A design note and clean-up | Every service and SDK class named exactly; what you deleted | The note, and a screenshot of the clean-up |
The capstone rehearses the exam in miniature: choose the service, connect keylessly, ground the agent, guard it, observe it, evaluate it, and delete it. Each of those steps is an objective on the outline.
